Top Tips for Working Out When It’s Cold

Cold weather doesn’t have to slow you down—it just requires the right preparation. Whether you’re training outdoors or warming up for a workout at Southwest Training, these tips will help you stay comfortable, safe, and ready to crush your session.

1. Check the Forecast First

Texas weather can be unpredictable—one minute it’s crisp and cool, the next it’s damp and windy. Before heading outside, check a reliable weather app so you know what to expect.

☀️ Will it be sunny or overcast?
💨 Is there windchill to factor in?
🌧️ Could rain make things slippery?

Always bring extra layers in case the temperature shifts. It’s better to be overprepared than stuck in freezing conditions without the right gear.

2. Dress in Layers

Ever start a workout feeling chilly, only to overheat 10 minutes later? That’s why layering is key.

Here’s a simple layering strategy:

1️⃣ Base layer – Moisture-wicking fabric to keep sweat off your skin
2️⃣ Insulating layer – Something warm like fleece to trap body heat
3️⃣ Outer layer – Windproof and waterproof shell to block the elements

You can always remove a layer once you start moving—but you can’t add what you didn’t bring!

3. Protect Your Hands & Feet

Cold hands and wet feet can ruin even the best workout. If you’re lifting weights, gripping a kettlebell, or running through damp grass, your extremities will feel the cold first.

✔️ Pack extra gloves so you can swap out a sweaty pair.
✔️ Wear warm socks and consider waterproof shoes if conditions are wet.
✔️ In extreme cold, a face mask can make breathing more comfortable.

Staying warm from head to toe will help you train longer and feel better.

4. Keep Your Head Covered

A lot of body heat escapes through the head, and cold ears aren’t fun.

🎩 Wear a hat or headband to protect against the chill.
🧣 A scarf or neck gaiter helps keep warmth in.
☀️ Don’t forget sunscreen! Even in cold weather, UV rays can still cause sunburn.

5. Take Extra Time to Warm Up

Cold muscles are more prone to injury, so a solid warm-up is essential before diving into intense training.

Try this warm-up routine before heading outside:

🔥 5-10 minutes of dynamic movement (jumping jacks, arm circles, lunges)
🔥 Gradual build-up in intensity (start light, then increase effort)
🔥 Focus on mobility (hip circles, shoulder rolls, and ankle rotations)

You’ll know you’re ready to train when your breathing increases and you feel like shedding a layer.

6. Know When It’s Too Cold

Training in the cold is great—until it isn’t.

Be aware of early signs of frostbite and hypothermia, especially if you’re outside for a long time. Watch for:

⚠️ Numbness, tingling, or pale skin
⚠️ Uncontrollable shivering
⚠️ Weakness, dizziness, or slurred speech

If you feel any of these symptoms, get inside and warm up immediately. Safety comes first!

7. Have Fun With It!

Cold-weather workouts might require more planning, but they can be refreshing, energizing, and fun. Plus, staying active in the winter months can help fight off seasonal fatigue and boost your mood.

🌲 Try a scenic hike or trail run
🏋️‍♂️ Use outdoor equipment for strength training
💨 Test your endurance with short, high-intensity bursts

And, of course, if you’d rather train indoors in a high-energy, supportive gym environment—we’ve got you covered at Southwest Training.
